Muddy Waters Research released a short report on Edison International (EIX), alleging the utility disregarded public safety by failing to de-energize transmission circuits that investigators concluded started the January 7, 2025 Eaton Fire in Los Angeles County. If found to have acted with conscious disregard, Edison faces ~$20 billion liability (~$20/share post-tax); if found imprudent, ~$4.3 billion liability (~$6.50/share post-tax). Muddy Waters claims the fire ignition was both foreseeable and preventable, and that Edison failed at multiple points to avert the disaster.
